Dear FUSD Community,
With the end of the school year rapidly approaching, I want to thank you for your assistance and patience as we work our way through the challenges of the past few months. COVID-19 has tested our abilities as educators like nothing before and it is through the strength and support of our community I feel we are entering Summer Break on a positive note.
Close of School Year
Our FUSD Task Force has worked to create guidelines for schools and families to follow in order to close the school year as efficiently as possible. These guidelines for returning materials, picking up possessions, and receiving report cards and other information has been, or will be, communicated to you directly from your school. Please feel free to contact your teacher, principal, or school with any questions.
New School Year
The FUSD Task Force has now turned its attention to the opening of schools in the fall. While procedures for closing schools for the summer remain basically the same regardless of circumstances, COVID-19 has brought a high level of uncertainty to how we will open again in August. The FUSD Task Force is now discussing procedures and strategies to prepare for three possible scenarios for the start of the school year on August 26th: Schools open as normal, resumption of distance-learning, or a combination. There may be other models to explore as well.
Over the coming weeks, the FUSD Task Force will look at every scenario, taking into account all current and assumed future guidelines regarding social distancing, cleaning and ability to gather in groups. As the plan comes together, families will have ample opportunity to comment and provide feedback. Myself and your school will provide regular updates of the process and how you can contribute. As the past three months have taught us, the situation is changing constantly so please be patient as we make necessary adjustments with the ultimate goal of student and staff safety.
Summer Activities
Our staff are hearing from many parents asking for suggestions of activities for their children over the summer. Prior to the school closure, our Curriculum & Instruction Department put together a comprehensive list of activities and resources. I also recommend checking the Peachjar page on your school website for opportunities in the community. As Shelter-in-Place restrictions are hopefully lifted, summer camps can be reinstated. We will pass along any information we receive.
Meal Service
Grab & Go meal pick-up service for impacted students and children will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of June. The FUSD Board of Education will be discussing possibilities for extending meal service through the summer at its June 3rd meeting. I will inform you of any new developments.
I thank you for your partnership. Enjoy your weekend.

Acting Superintendent
